Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Men and women who set their sights on a target number for their weight are often disappointed when they reach their goal and still see pockets of fat in various areas of the body. These localised areas may not respond to diet and exercise, leaving a body contour that is not what they were expecting. For these individuals, liposuction may be the solution for eliminating small deposits and sculpting a sleeker profile with long-lasting results. The surgery is less invasive than other body contouring procedures and offers results that will last as long as you maintain a healthy weight.

At Niche Plastic Surgery, our surgeons offer different liposuction techniques that allow us to tailor this procedure to your precise needs. Whether you want to remove stubborn fat from the midsection, create a sleeker upper arm profile, or change the shape of the thighs, our team is ready to help you achieve all your body contouring goals. From your first consultation with us, we will take the time to listen to your concerns, so we can design a treatment program that will meet your needs and desired outcome best.

Problems Addressed through Liposuction

Liposuction is a versatile procedure that can remove unwanted fat from the following areas:

  • Abdomen and midsection
  • Hips and flanks
  • Upper and lower back
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Calves and behind the knees
  • Upper arms
  • Male breasts (gynecomastia treatment)
  • Neck and chin

Our surgeon will evaluate your situation to determine whether liposuction will provide you with the best possible results. If liposuction is not the right procedure for you, we offer many other surgical and nonsurgical body contouring options. We may also determine that a combination of treatments might be the optimal approach for you.

Liposuction Options

Our professional team at Niche Plastic Surgery offers the following liposuction techniques:

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is the most popular technique used because it can adequately address a variety of treatment areas. This treatment begins with the injections of tumescent fluid into the area where fat will be removed. The solution contains a numbing agent that will keep you comfortable while the liquid makes it easier to remove the fat cells from the body. This technique is appropriate for removal of both small and large areas of fat and can be used for nearly any treatment area on the body with outstanding results.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

Also known as PAL, power-assisted liposuction incorporates mechanical vibration to the procedure to gently loosen fat cells for easier removal. The advantage of integrating this technique is that it can result in less trauma to surrounding tissue, leading to a more comfortable, faster recovery process. This technique can be combined with tumescent liposuction to create a more pleasant patient experience without compromising results. The addition of PAL also allows for removal of more fat during a single treatment session, since the vibration enhances the precision and the speed of the procedure.

Our surgeons will determine the best approach for you based on the treatment area and the amount of fat you would like to remove. Rest assured, our goal is to help you achieve the best possible body contouring results using the least invasive method possible.

About the Procedure

Liposuction is usually performed under general anaesthesia at Niche Plastic Surgery, although some patients may be able to undergo the treatment with local anaesthesia and sedation if there is a lower amount of contouring to be achieved. No matter which type of anaesthesia you receive before your surgery, you will be completely comfortable throughout the treatment process. Many patients can do liposuction as day surgery, but if you have a significant amount of fat removed or combine this procedure with another, an overnight stay in the hospital may be recommended.

The tumescent fluid will be injected into the treatment area at the beginning of the procedure. Once that is administered, small incisions will be made to allow for the insertion of a small tube called a cannula. This cannula will be placed directly into the fat deposit where it can loosen the fat and remove it from the body using integrated suction. Compression garments may also be used after treatment to minimise swelling and help skin conform to the new contour smoothly.

Basics for a Comfortable Recovery

Liposuction may be less invasive than other plastic surgery procedures, but there is a recovery process after the treatment. It is typical to have some bruising and swelling around the incision sites, and you will feel sore for a few days after your procedure. We will prescribe oral medication to manage the discomfort during that time. You will also probably feel like resting and taking it easy for a few days.

Patients are usually back to work within about one week. Strenuous exercise can be resumed within about one month. Our surgeons will give you more specific information as they monitor your recovery.

Setting Expectations for Your Results

You should see evidence of your liposuction results fairly early, as the bruising and swelling associated with the procedure does not typically last long. Your body profile should look smoother and sleeker and you will likely notice your clothing fits a bit more comfortably once those bulges disappear. As long as your skin has maintained good elasticity, you should not be able to detect the precise areas where the liposuction took place after the body heals completely.

Liposuction is not designed to be a weight loss procedure, and it is usually recommended for men and women who have already achieved a healthy, stable weight. Once your results become apparent, they will be long-lasting since fat cells are permanently eliminated from the body. If you gain a significant amount of weight after treatment, fat cells remaining in the treatment area can begin to expand and compromise your results.

Combining Liposuction with Other Procedures

Liposuction is an efficient body contouring procedure when it is performed on its own. However, it can also be combined with other surgeries to enhance results. Some of the most common surgeries combined with liposuction include:

  • Tummy tucks (abdominoplasty)
  • Thigh lifts
  • Upper arm lifts
  • Male breast reduction procedures
  • Neck lifts

Our experienced plastic surgeons can help you design the right treatment for you based on what your concerns are and what you would like to see from your results. In most cases, liposuction can be performed at the same time as other surgeries so that you can achieve your aesthetic goals with just one time under anaesthesia and one recovery process.

Liposuction is a versatile procedure that can be used for a variety of body contouring concerns. With minimally-invasive techniques, our surgeons are equipped to remove unwanted fat from the body without a significant amount of discomfort and downtime after surgery. With multiple techniques to choose from, you have peace-of-mind in knowing we are ready to tailor your procedure to your specifications, giving you the precise results you want to achieve. Our team will customise your treatment to provide you with the most beautiful, natural outcome possible.
