Brow Lift

What is a Brow Lift

Does your face portray your actual feelings, or do you look tired, sad or angry sometimes even when you don’t feel that way? While smiles and frowns tell a lot about your mood, the eyes and forehead also communicate emotions in a big way. If forehead lines, and heavy eyebrows are causing you to look unhappy or tired when you’re not, brow lift surgery offers a long-term solution.

At Niche Plastic Surgery we offer a number of surgical brow lift options that can rejuvenate and refresh your appearance. Our specialist plastic surgeons have considerable experience in performing facial procedures with a natural looking result. We offer customised treatment options to ensure that the look you want is the look you get. Keep reading to find out more about brow lift surgery procedures.

Benefits of a Brow Lift

Over time the skin that covers the forehead starts to stretch and drop, making the face look older and tired. Sagging skin affects the position of the eyebrows and appearance of the upper eyelids, which can make you look tired, angry, or worried on both good and bad days. Along with age, your genetic makeup may make you prone to a heavier, thicker brow line, casting a perpetual frown across your face.

A brow lift procedure, also called a forehead lift, tightens up stretched skin around the forehead and eyebrow areas. The overall effect creates a more relaxed and youthful look to the face, making the eyes look alert and refreshed. A brow lift also involves repositioning the underlying muscles and tissues, which helps smooth out the deep furrows and wrinkles that form over the years.

Types of Brow Lift Procedures

Each person’s anatomy and facial structure differs so there’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach to a brow lift procedure. Fortunately there are many types of brow lift procedures each of which corrects the brow in different ways. This range of options enables cosmetic surgeons to more accurately produce your intended result. The specialist plastic surgeons at Niche Plastic Surgery have considerable experience in performing cosmetic procedures so they’re more than able to address your individual goals and desired outcomes.

Types of brow lift procedures include:

  • Short scar brow lift
  • Temporal brow lift
  • Trans-blepharoplasty browpexy
  • Direct brow lift
  • Coronal brow lift

Short scar brow lift

This name encompasses all brow lifts that require incisions shorter than the coronal lift but longer than endoscopic access points. There is often 2 and sometimes 3 small incisions made at each side and the middle of the forehead, just behind the hair line. Through these incisions the attachments of the brow to deep structures such as bone and fascia can be released allowing a gentle elevation of the eyebrow that is secured to bone to maintain its position.

Temporal Brow Lift

Unlike the first two procedures, the temporal brow lift only works with the outer one-third portion of the eyebrows, or temporal areas, rather than the full brow area. As the face ages the lateral brow is the first area that starts to droop causing the upper eyelid to sag and appear heavy. The temporal brow lift eliminates sagging eyelids and makes the eyes look more lively and alert.

Trans-Blepharoplasty Brow Lift

The trans-blepharoplasty brow lift is a modification on the temporal lift procedure. With a trans-blepharoplasty enhancement the surgeon makes an incision in the upper eyelid and lifts the eyebrow to create an arched effect. Both the trans-blepharoplasty and temporal brow lift procedures are minimally invasive options, so recovery times are shorter than usual.

Direct brow lift

This involves excision of skin and muscle directly above the eyebrow to create a very powerful and stable brow lift. Unlike other procedures the scar is not hidden within the hair on the scalp or the eyelid crease, for this procedure the scar is placed either within a natural crease on the forehead or just on the edge of the eyebrow hair. It is typically reserved for a heavy male brow.

Coronal Brow Lift

As the oldest of all the brow lift techniques, the coronal lift, also known as an open brow lift, entails making a single incision from ear to ear above the forehead. The overall effect helps to shorten the length of the forehead and lift the eyebrows. The coronal brow lift is the most invasive of all the procedures since it requires such a large incision. For this reason, most surgeons today perform coronal lifts less often, opting for other less invasive approaches.

The Brow Lift Procedure

Brow lift procedures are always performed in an accredited hospital, typically under a general anaesthetic. As brow lift procedures vary in complexity and are often combined with other procedures, the duration of the surgery and post operative care will also vary.  It may be possible for some patients to go home on the day of surgery, others will require an overnight hospital stay. The incisions are closed with sutures which will be reviewed at one week after the surgery.

What’s the Recovery Period Like?

As one of the least invasive cosmetic enhancements, patients tend to experience minimal pain after brow lift surgery. You can, however, expect to feel a tightness across the forehead. Swelling and bruising may be present for the first one to two weeks.

We recommend low activity for the first three to four days following surgery to allow yourself to rest and recover. After one to two weeks, you may be able to resume work provided your job doesn’t require strenuous activity. It’s not uncommon to tire quickly after surgery so a limited work schedule may be in order. At Niche Plastic Surgery our staff will go over everything you need to know and also schedule regular follow-up appointments to ensure your recovery is progressing well.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Brow Lift?

Both men and women can enjoy the benefits of a brow lift. Compared to temporary cosmetic enhancements, such as dermal fillers, brow lift surgery offers a long-term solution for eliminating wrinkles and sagging skin along the forehead and brow. Ultimately, if you can identify with one or more of the following situations, you’re likely a good candidate for brow lift surgery:

  • You want to get rid of forehead lines
  • You’re unhappy with bridge-of-nose wrinkles
  • Your face appears tired, angry or sad even when in a good mood
