Upper eyelid surgery, also known as upper blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and sometimes small pockets of fat, from the top lid. The goals of the procedure are to open the eye and create a refreshed lid contour. The removal of excess skin re-establishes a smooth upper lid and creates the space for eyeliner and makeup. You will have at least two consultations with your surgeon before your procedure takes place. Multiple meetings allow our team to gain a complete understanding of what you want to achieve through your surgery. It also provides you ample opportunities to ask questions and prepare for your operation. We will take pre- and post-surgery photographs, so you can fully appreciate the changes in your appearance, and we have an accurate record of what was performed. The technique suitable for your surgery will vary depending on the concerns you have about your appearance, your goals and how best to achieve them. It is not uncommon to perform upper blepharoplasty in conjunction with other procedures, such as, eyelid ptosis correction (tightening of the muscle that opens the eyelid) and brow lift. Upper blepharoplasty can also be done in the context of complete facial rejuvenation with a face and neck lift.
Upper blepharoplasty will typically take place in an accredited hospital with a specialist anaesthetist. While most patients will have a general anaesthetic for the procedure, you may be able to undergo surgery with local anaesthetic, with or without sedation. An overnight hospital stay is usually not required.
The surgery involves an incision in the natural crease of the upper lid so that visible scarring after surgery will be minimal. Excess skin and muscle are removed to re-create a sharp and smooth upper lid crease. Once the skin is removed, and a smoother contour is created, your surgeon will close the incisions with fine sutures that will need to be removed within five to seven days after surgery.
At the time of your initial consultation your surgeon will determine what type of procedure is best suited to you. It is not uncommon to combine upper blepharoplasty with ptosis correction. This is a tightening of the muscle that opens the upper lid. This muscle and its attachments can lengthen and stretch out with age causing the upper lid to drop lower over your eye. Upper blepharoplasty skin and muscle excision provides access an opportunity to correct this lengthening and allow you to open the eyelid wider, which is a natural and youthful look. Not all patients will require a ptosis correction but for those that do it will significantly enhance the outcome of upper blepharoplasty alone.
A brow lift is another procedure that is frequently combined with upper blepharoplasty. The position and appearance of the eyebrow is closely related to the upper eyelid and for some patients a combined procedure will produce the best and most long-lasting results. If a brow lift is recommended at the time of upper blepharoplasty it will typically be performed under a general anaesthetic and may require a drain tube to remain in place overnight.
It is vital during the postoperative period that you allow sufficient time for your body to rest and recover. Your surgeon will advise you to refrain from heavy exercise, excessive work or sports involving physical contact. You should plan to spend a week to 10 days at home away from work and other activities to give your body ample recovery time. You may not be able to drive until you are fully recovered and off all pain medications.
You will be given instructions to help keep you comfortable during recovery. We will also provide you with prescription pain medication you can take during the first few days after surgery.
