Thigh Reduction

What is a thigh lift?

A thighplasty — also known as a thigh lift — can help improve the appearance of the thighs by elimi-nating sagging or loose skin and improving overall skin elasticity in the thigh area. When excess skin is excised and loose skin is lifted, patients can once again enjoy better skin tone and contours in their thighs. The procedure is ideally suited for anyone who has been experiencing drooping or loose skin in the front, inner or outer thighs, especially those individuals who may recently have lost a significant amount of weight.

What are the benefits of a thigh lift?

A thigh lift can significantly improve loss of skin tone and drooping, loose or sagging skin in the front, inner or outer thigh area. After your thigh lift procedure, you will experience tighter and firmer skin with minimal laxity, and you can fully enjoy your attractive result with incisions and scarring carefully placed within discreet areas. You will also enjoy superior and long-lasting results after your thigh lift in comparison to other thigh procedures which only affect the quality of the skin without eliminating excess skin.

Your Thigh Lift Procedure

A thigh lift procedure, on average, requires two hours of surgery time and is performed under general anaesthesia in a day-surgery centre. Each procedure is tailored to the individual needs of the patient, so the length of the procedure, as well as the length and placement of the incisions, will vary from patient to patient. However, your surgeon will always focus on minimising the required incisions and will place them in areas where they can be easily disguised by clothing, generally in the bikini-line area. There are three common areas of the thighs which a thigh lift can address.

Inner Thigh Lift

During an inner thigh lift, your surgeon will make an incision at the top of the thigh, typically where the lower edge of the bikini would fall. A carefully predetermined amount of skin will be excised to eliminate unwanted skin laxity, and the remaining skin of the thigh will be lifted, creating the desired tightening.

Medial Thigh Lift

A medial thigh lift provides improvements to the inner, upper thigh area. The incision will typically begin at the buttock crease and end at the groin. Afterward, skin is excised, and fat is removed, based on the needs of the patient, and the remaining skin is lifted to tighten the area and improve its appearance.

Bilateral, or outer thigh lift

In an outer thigh lift, a thighplasty may lift the thigh as well as the buttock area in a technique known as a circumferential lower body lift that may require a longer incision to achieve the desired improvements in skin laxity. Liposuction may also be recommended before a bilateral thighplasty to achieve maximum tone and contours post-surgery.

In all variants of the procedure, your surgeon will identify the areas requiring augmentation and the location of the incisions while you stand, and deep sutures will ensure that the augmented areas heal well and without sagging during recovery.

Recovery from a Thigh Lift

The length of your recovery will depend on the type of procedure you have had and the amount of augmentation performed. In addition, each patient will recover at his or her own rate. However, most patients should plan for approximately 10 days of recovery time before returning to work. Although pain during recovery is minimal, and over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient to manage discomfort, patients are encouraged to rest and avoid excess leg movement. Bruising and swelling may persist for up to one month, although these symptoms will continually decrease throughout this time. Patients may resume all normal activities within two to four months post-surgery.

Patients can expect scars from their thigh lift surgery to be well hidden within the bikini line wherever possible. Drains may be placed in the surgical area to promote drainage, and if you have them, your surgeon will generally remove them after a few days.

What results can I expect from a thigh lift?

A thigh lift can provide patients with long-lasting improvements to skin tone and laxity issues in the front, outside and inner thigh areas including the minimisation or elimination of dropping and sagging skin. The skill of your surgeon will also allow you to enjoy the full benefit of your thigh augmentation surgery by making the scarring as discrete as possible so that it does not detract from the quality of your results.
